Latest Nystagmus Network News Release

Organisers of this year’s Nystagmus Network Open Day will welcome people from across Europe to Newcastle’s Centre for Life on Saturday 9th May.

The Open Day is a great opportunity for people and families affected by the eye condition to meet others in the same situation.

Delegates can also learn from vision scientists, researchers and eye health professionals about the cause, diagnosis and treatments of nystagmus.

International awareness of the annual Open Day has increased (thanks largely to social media) in recent years. Previous events have been attended by people from Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden and Australia.

This year has already attracted delegates from France, Germany and Sweden.

Keynote speaker Gerard McDermott will explain how being born with nystagmus hasn’t stopped him from becoming a successful actor and writer. The event also includes sessions on education, benefits and the daily challenges of living with nystagmus. As usual the NN Open Day is in a city centre location which gives easy access to public transport and hotels.

Richard Wilson, Chairman, Nystagmus Network, said: “It is especially pleasing to welcome people from abroad to our Open Day. I am really looking forward to meeting and hearing from Gerard McDermott, I know he will give encouragement to parents of children with nystagmus. For many people the most important aspect of a Nystagmus Network Open Day is discovering that you are not alone and that other people face the same problems as you.”
